Overwhelming pressure on stressed pupils and young professionals could be putting their mental health at risk. Sometimes their struggle to cope with the enormous pressure to succeed, can give rise to stress and anxiety, which, according to experts, could result in bruxism, a chronic disease in which the patient grinds or clenches the teeth.
Medical experts have warned in recent years about the steady rise in the number of teeth grinders these days, which causes headaches, jaw pain and wears down the teeth.
Dr. Taha Shaban, a dentist and maxillofacial specialist, told Arab News about the many reasons a person can develop this illness.
“When people are stressed, they gain energy that needs to be released somehow and for certain youngsters it comes in the form of muscle contractions,” Dr. Shaban said.
“I’m seeing that most of the youngsters who are either studying or working are anxious, stressed out and very concerned about their future, and they’re taking it out on their teeth. Bruxism is a subconscious muscle activity. It usually occurs during sleep, but also while awake. Most grinders don’t realize they suffer this disease unless a symptom arises, such as a fragmented tooth or facial tenderness,” he added.
With all the stress and hardship on them nowadays, around 10 to 15 percent of youngsters suffer from severe teeth grinding, said Dr. Mohammed Rashid, senior ENT specialist, adding that not only the youngsters, but also adults from 30 to 40 years old are likely to develop Bruxism.
“We are trying to make this disease known to people and help the young generation to loosen up and relax through certain medications and by advising them to use protective mouth appliance, such as a teeth guard. It absorbs the pressure of constant night grinding and can also be used anytime during the day,” Dr. Rashid explained.
The dentist also stressed the need to consult with a professional regarding the symptoms, since untreated Bruxism may result in gum damage, tooth loss, and jaw-related disorders.
